{"id":796,"date":"2015-09-25T14:34:35","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T14:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/?p=796"},"modified":"2022-03-07T12:14:36","modified_gmt":"2022-03-07T12:14:36","slug":"helping-your-business-go-green-a-guide-to-recycling-symbols","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/helping-your-business-go-green-a-guide-to-recycling-symbols","title":{"rendered":"Helping your business go green: a guide to Recycling Symbols"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The RAJA Group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/inside-rajapack-a-history-of-the-raja-group\/\">began life in 1954<\/a> as a company selling recycled cardboard boxes, and our focus on being environmentally responsible has continued to this day.<\/p>\n<p>Ensuring your company is environmentally responsible not only benefits the planet, but it\u2019s important to your customers too.\u00a0 Even if it isn\u2019t currently a priority for your business, you can be sure it is for your customers, who\u2019ll factor it in when choosing their supplier.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been speaking with experts in the packaging industry (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.packagingeurope.com\/Packaging-Europe-News\/64739\/How-Ecoresponsible-Packaging-is-Changing-the-Industry.html\">such as John Kirkby<\/a>), and we\u2019ve learnt that understanding which materials can be recycled is one of the first challenges that companies face when trying to be more environmentally responsible.<\/p>\n<p>To help you better understand what can be recycled and where to recycle it, we\u2019ve listed the most common recycling symbols below with guidance and examples, which should help you and your business on your first steps to going green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>General Recycling Symbols <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Please recycle now\u2019<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-809 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Please-recycle-now.png\" alt=\"Please recycle now\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Please recycle now\u2019 symbol is a call to action; it says that the environment will be harmed if this product has to be destroyed or left in landfill, as per normal disposal.<\/p>\n<p>This symbol is not informative, but encourages the user to recycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2018Mobius Loop\u2019<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-807 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Mobius-loop.gif\" alt=\"Mobius loop\" width=\"120\" height=\"113\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to the \u2018Please recycle now\u2019 symbol, the Mobius Loopis an alert to the user that this product can be recycled, rather than offering any specific information. The symbol was created in the late 1970&#8217;s by American Gary Anderson, and is now universally recognised as the generic symbol for recycling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When a pack has more than one form of material.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-808 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/More-than-one-form-of-material.png\" alt=\"More than one form of material\" width=\"262\" height=\"163\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Products such as microwaveable meals and packaging with built in protection require different materials for transit and end use. Some of these materials may be recycleable and others aren\u2019t. A symbol such as this one (pictured left) informs the user which materials can be recycled, and that they need to separated before recycling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Glass<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-806 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Glass.gif\" alt=\"Glass\" width=\"187\" height=\"178\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your product has this symbol, it needs to be recycled with other glass. Some councils and recycling services will provide a container that sits inside your recycling bin in order for you to recycle glass. If this doesn\u2019t apply to your area, products with this symbol should be taken and sorted into bottle banks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recycling Plastic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following symbols are commonly found on bottles containing drinks, soaps and shampoos as well as food packaging. They\u2019re usually located on the label alongside the instructions\u00a0for\u00a0use.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-797 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/11.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"84\" height=\"123\" \/>This symbol means the product is made from <strong>Polyethylene Terephalate<\/strong>. It is a very common\u00a0form of plastic which is used to contain products such as fizzy drinks, cooking oils and water. Products with this symbol can be recycled in recycling bins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-798 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/2.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"84\" height=\"103\" \/>This symbol means the product is made from <strong>High Density Polyethylene<\/strong>. HDPE is commonly used for milk bottles, washing up liquids and shower gels. Again, this plastic can be placed in most recycling bins.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-799 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/31.jpg\" alt=\"3\" width=\"83\" height=\"107\" \/>Polyvinyl Chloride <\/strong>is a form of plastic which is no longer very common. Products with this symbol on can still be recycled in most recycling bins, but don\u2019t expect to find too many bottles made of this material.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-800 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/4.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"90\" height=\"90\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Low Density Polyeythlene <\/strong>plastic is commonly used to wrap meat or vegetables. Because of the mixture of materials and chance for contamination, these plastics are not widely recycled. They should be disposed of in general waste containers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-801 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/5.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"92\" height=\"92\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Polypropylene <\/strong>plastic is often used in the food industry and like LDPE, is not widely recycled in the UK. Products with this symbol should be deposited in general waste containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-802 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/6.png\" alt=\"6\" width=\"89\" height=\"109\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polystyrene <\/strong>is most commonly used as protection or loose fill for products in transit. This form of plastic is rarely recyclable in the UK and should be placed in general waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-803 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/7.jpg\" alt=\"7\" width=\"88\" height=\"120\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other <\/strong>materials includes all other resins and multi-material plastics. Because of the use of different materials, plastics with this symbol on should be placed in general waste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alumnium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-804 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/aluminium.gif\" alt=\"aluminium\" width=\"113\" height=\"108\" \/>This symbol indicates a product is made from aluminium. Although most aluminium, including cans and foil is recyclable, please remember the following: 1) do not recycle if it has been contaminated by food produce and 2) Some recycling plants are not equipped to recycle foil. Please check with your local council before recycling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Compostable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-805 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.co.uk\/blog-uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Compostable.jpg\" alt=\"Compostable\" width=\"114\" height=\"114\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although not technically a recycling symbol, the compostable symbol is important nonetheless.
