2024 is going to be a big year for everyone at RAJA as we kick our CSR and environmental contributions into overdrive! We have numerous projects in the works as always but it never hurts to take a look at the wider market. Some big changes are coming through 2024 and it pays to be prepared. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the top headlines this month to keep an eye on. We’ve got a few interesting changes coming this month.

Welsh Workplaces step up Recycling

Recent announcements from the Welsh government have changed the law for businesses. From 6 April 2024, it will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling. This law also applies to all waste and recycling collectors and processors who manage household-like waste from workplaces. It’s a bold move intended to help promote recycling, by separating the waste it makes it easier to recycle and will help Wales get even greener. You can check out the new law here.

Defra Appoints new EPR Scheme Administrator

Announced last week, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced a new head of their Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme. Margaret Bates is the managing director of OPRL, a well-established not-for-profit that helps businesses with consistent UK-wide recycling. A natural addition to her already impressive CV, she will find ways to help incentivise producers and consumers to use less packaging, to use packaging that can be recycled, and to meet higher recycling targets. You can read more about her appointment here.

Data Reporting Deadline for small businesses moved to 2025

Another update from Defra! This time for small businesses and their waste reporting. Initially, small businesses of less than £1 million turnover would be reporting packaging data by April 2024. That deadline is now April 2025! Which means more time for small businesses to work out their reporting and improve their efficiency. They also advised that the nation of sale reporting requirements is similarly postponed. You can find more details right here!
