Cold Chain: Eco solutions to Food Packaging

3 min read 17 March 2023

During the pandemic, we saw a boom in the takeout business. It wasn’t just traditional hot food being delivered either, there was also an increase in meal prep deliveries and cold food being ordered. In fact, it’s expected online food will reach 21% of the market by 2025. While certainly a positive from an industry point of view, food packaging is not always the most sustainable. Particularly when it comes to cold food. The needs for fresh food delivery are very different to the requirements for hot food and usually are not as environmentally friendly. Fortunately, we have a solution. Working with Ranpak we have launched a range of sustainable packaging options to address just this problem.

ClimaPack

In the ever-evolving world of food packaging, our latest addition to the cold chain range is a game changer.  The first of its kind in the market, an all-paper packaging option which includes the best selling Climaliner.  This initiative is not only a convenient choice for consumers it is a commitment to our environmental responsibility.

With an increasing demand for sustainable packaging the ClimaPack is the first kerbside recyclable set in the market.  This packaging solution comprises of a double-walled box and two thermal sheets of our Climaliner.

WrapPak Protector Paper

WrapPak Paper is one of the industry leading examples for eco-conscious void fill options that also doubles as an excellent thermal lining option. Because of the strong “feathering” of the paper, it works to absorb shock and also work as a natural insulator. And because it’s manufactured from 100% FSC certified paper, WrapPak paper is fully recyclable. It’s even suitable for curb-side recycling meaning your customers can recycle it after they receive your product. The paper works to insulate by itself but is more efficient when combined with the next items on our list.

Clima-Liner and Recycold

Ranpak’s novel approach to the problem of environmentally unfriendly cold packs was to make one that’s made of paper not plastic! The Recycold gel ice packs use a plant based gel that freezes at -2 and can be disposed of in the garden or sink easily. Being paper and plant based, they’re perfect for more eco-conscious food brands to ship their products and keep them cool in transit. The gel packs work best combined with Ranpak Clima-Liner. The paper lattice helps insulate and protect in transit and they come pre-cut into sheets. Simply pack your box, including the cool pack, and you’re good to go. When used with WrapPak paper, it helps ensure products stay chilled, frozen or ambient in transit.

CoolPak

While not made from paper, CoolPak packaging uses a similar gel to Recycold to keep products cool in transit. They boast a particularly cool activation method, simply soak them in fresh water for 10 minutes. This causes the internal polymer to expand and freeze the pads. Include these in your packaging fabric side down and you’re good to go! The gel itself can be safely washed down the sink however the foil and fabric are not recyclable. They are, however, highly re-usable which can make them of greater utility for B2B transport.

Our range of eco-conscious products is always expanding and we’re making strides to improve our food packaging range. If you have a particular need, why not get in touch and see if we can provide a solution that’s perfect for you!
