Reliable for creative and DIY projects

3M™ masking tape for painting, decorating and light bundling applications where clean removal without surface damage is needed. The paper backing tears cleanly by hand, conforms to curves and edges, and provides a write-on surface for labelling. The rubber adhesive holds firmly during use and removes cleanly without leaving residue on most surfaces. Available in four widths: 18mm, 24mm, 36mm and 48mm on 50m rolls in either general purpose or high performance options. Shelf life is 12 months from manufacture.

Sold in packs priced per roll.

Where does 3M™ masking tape work best?

3M™ Scotch® masking tape covers the full range of general masking, painting and light sealing tasks where a hand-tearable tape must hold a clean paint edge, protect a surface temporarily, and remove without trace.

  • Precision decorating, spray painting and craft work where a clean paint edge is needed and the tape must conform to curved or angled surfaces without lifting.
  • Protecting surfaces during maintenance and DIY; the rubber adhesive holds on metal, plastic and most painted surfaces and removes cleanly without marking.
  • Light bundling, sealing and labelling where the write-on paper surface allows batch codes, handling instructions or content notes to be written directly on the tape.
  • Operations that need a consistent, well-known brand grade across multiple widths from a single supplier, with the confidence of 3M Scotch product consistency.

Not suitable for

  • Long-term surface protection: masking tape is a temporary tape designed to be removed after the task is complete; leaving it in place for extended periods risks adhesive transfer and difficulty of removal.
  • Carton sealing: masking tape isn’t rated for carton sealing under load; use polypropylene packaging tape for carton sealing applications.

How to use

This 3M™ general purpose masking tape uses a rubber adhesive on paper which grips immediately but is designed to release cleanly; the longer masking tape is left in place before removal, the greater the risk of adhesive transfer, especially on freshly painted surfaces.

  • Apply to a clean, dry surface: dust, grease or moisture under the tape edge will allow paint bleed and reduce the quality of the masked line; wipe the surface before applying.
  • Tear or cut to length: the paper backing tears cleanly by hand at a sharp angle; for consistent lengths or high-volume use, a tape dispenser with a 76mm core is faster and reduces hand fatigue.
  • Press the edge firmly: run a thumb along the tape edge to ensure full contact with the surface; any lifted section of the tape edge will allow paint to bleed underneath.
  • Remove promptly after use: remove while the paint or adhesive is still slightly tacky for the cleanest edge; peel back at a 45-degree angle rather than straight up to avoid tearing the paint film or leaving adhesive residue.
  • Store correctly: store at 15–25°C, maximum 65% relative humidity. Shelf life is 12 months from manufacture; natural rubber adhesive degrades in heat and damp storage.

Product FAQs

Can 3M™ masking tape be used on delicate or freshly painted surfaces?

On fully cured paintwork this tape removes cleanly from most surfaces. On freshly applied or delicate finishes the rubber adhesive may lift the surface coating on removal; allow paint to cure fully before applying and test on a small inconspicuous area first.

Which width should be used for standard interior decorating?

24mm is the most common width for cutting in along skirting boards, door frames and window surrounds in standard interior decorating; 36mm is better for wider coverage on coving and dado rails; 48mm suits broad surface protection and rough masking of large areas.

Is 3M™101E masking tape resistant to solvents and water?

Yes; the rubber adhesive on the 101E is resistant to water and common solvents, which means the tape will not lift during water-based paint application and will protect the masked surface from paint and solvent splatter during spraying or brushing.
