Layflat Tubing
Create and seal your own custom-sized plastic bags with our layflat tubing and heat sealers
The most adaptable bagging solution out there, layflat tubing is a must have for any business that’s got to bag up a lot of goods of different shapes. While our range of bagging options is extensive, it’d be impossible to stock every single size – which is where Layflat tubing comes in!
What is Layflat Tubing?
Layflat tubing is a continuous roll of polyethylene film, flattened into a tube shape. It is highly versatile and can be cut and sealed to create custom-sized bags for packaging a wide variety of items. Available in different thicknesses (measured in microns), layflat tubing is ideal for protecting items from dust, moisture and contaminants. Its versatility makes it perfect for multiple industries, especially when needing to bag multiple irregular shaped items.
Layflat tubing is best suited for applications that require customisable packaging. Thicker variants, like our 125 micron heavy duty layflat tubing, are ideal for heavy, sharp or bulky items like machinery parts or furniture, since they provide enhanced durability and resistance to tearing. If you don’t need the thickness, a 65 micron example of layflat plastic tubing is perfect for lightweight or soft goods such as clothing or small accessories, offering economical protection for less demanding uses.
Is Layflat tubing measured in microns or gauge?
While most suppliers will use microns as the unit of measurement, you may have also heard it referred to as gauge. Microns and gauge are two units commonly used to measure the thickness of layflat tubing, but they represent different scales. A micron is a metric unit equal to one-millionth of a meter (1 µm = 0.001 mm), providing a precise and universally accepted measurement. In contrast, gauge is an older, imperial-based unit still used in some industries, with higher gauge numbers indicating thicker material. To convert between the two, 1 gauge is approximately equal to 0.254 microns. For example, 125-micron tubing is roughly equivalent to 500-gauge tubing.
Understanding these terms ensures proper selection of tubing thickness for specific applications, avoiding confusion and ensuring the material meets the required strength and durability standards.
How do I seal layflat tubing?
Sealing layflat tubing is quick, safe and easy with a heat sealer. By applying heat, the heat sealer fuses the two pieces of plastic together.
When choosing a heat sealer for your workplace, think about how frequently you’ll be using it. If you’re operating at low volumes or with smaller products, then our desk top heat sealers are enough to do the job perfectly. If you are handling larger products or high volumes, then our industrial heat sealers will boost the efficiency of your production line. To help you maintain your equipment, we also stock spare kits to ensure your heat sealer lasts longer.
Can layflat tubing be recycled?
Yes! Our layflat tubing is made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which means the majority of the range can be recycled.
