Replaces screws and rivets in industrial bonding
3M VHB tape is a transparent acrylic foam double-sided tape designed to replace mechanical fasteners in industrial bonding applications where adhesive must carry sustained loads, absorb vibration and seal against moisture simultaneously. VHB (Very High Bond) refers to the permanently bonded acrylic foam construction which conforms to surface irregularities, distributes stress across the bond area and accommodates differential thermal expansion between dissimilar materials. Performs in applications for short-term use at a temperature up to 149°C or long-term use withstanding up to 93°C, UV-stable, 19mm wide on 33m rolls. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture.
Sold as a single roll.
Where does 3M VHB tape work best?
This 3M acrylic foam tape replaces screws, rivets and welds in applications where mechanical fasteners would damage the substrate, create stress concentrations or leave visible fixings on a finished surface.
- Bonding signs, panels and cladding to metal, glass and composite structures where screw fixings are not acceptable for aesthetic or structural reasons.
- Industrial assembly involving dissimilar materials (metal to plastic, glass to aluminium) where thermal expansion differences would crack a rigid adhesive bond; the foam core absorbs the differential movement.
- Vibration-dampening applications in transport, equipment and machinery where the acrylic foam absorbs shock and prevents fastener loosening over time.
- Outdoor and marine applications where the bond must be UV-stable and provide a watertight seal; 3M VHB double sided tape bonds and seals simultaneously without secondary sealant.
Not suitable for
- Below 10°C application: applying in cold conditions prevents full surface wetting and the bond will not reach full strength.
- Carton sealing and general packaging: VHB tape is an industrial bonding product, not a carton sealing tape. For box sealing use polypropylene or paper tape.
- Light mounting and display work: for lower-load mounting, signage and display assembly use double-sided foam tape alternative, which is designed for lighter applications.
How to use
3M VHB adhesive tape builds its full bond strength over 72 hours after application; the initial grab is strong, but the maximum load should not be applied until full cure is reached. Surface preparation is more critical for 3M VHB (very high bond) tape than for most tapes because the foam conforms to the surface, meaning any contamination is encapsulated in the bond rather than pushed aside.
- Prepare the surfaces thoroughly: clean both bonding surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry fully; any oil, release agent, moisture or particulate contamination trapped in the bond will significantly reduce long-term bond strength.
- Apply at 10°C or above: the foam must be warm enough to conform to the substrate surface; in cool environments bring the tape and substrate to room temperature before application, as cold foam will not achieve full surface contact.
- Position accurately before pressing: peel the liner from one side only, position the tape on the first substrate, then peel the second liner before pressing onto the mating surface. VHB bonds permanently and cannot be repositioned once full contact is made.
- Apply firm, even pressure: press down firmly across the full bond area using a roller or firm tool; the foam must make full contact with both surfaces to achieve the intended bond strength.
- Allow full cure before loading: initial handling strength is reached within an hour; full bond strength develops over 72 hours. Do not apply the intended service load until full cure is reached. Store remaining rolls at 15–25°C, maximum 65% relative humidity.

Product FAQs
What does VHB stand for and why does it matter for bonding applications?
VHB stands for Very High Bond; it refers to 3M’s acrylic foam tape construction in which the adhesive is permanently integrated into the foam core rather than coated onto a separate film. This construction distributes load across the full bond area, absorbs vibration and thermal shock, and creates a watertight seal, giving it substantially greater long-term bond strength than standard double-sided tape on demanding substrates.
Can 3M VHB double sided tape replace screws or rivets?
Yes, in applications where the surface and load are within the tape’s rated range; VHB tape is used as a mechanical fastener replacement in signage, transport, construction cladding and industrial assembly. Confirm load ratings with the 3M technical datasheet before replacing fasteners in safety-critical applications.
Why must surfaces be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol before applying 3M VHB tape?
VHB foam conforms to and encapsulates the surface it contacts; any oil, release agent or particulate contamination becomes part of the bond interface and creates a weak layer that will fail before the adhesive itself. IPA removes surface contamination without leaving a residue that would itself interfere with adhesion.
Why does 3M VHB tape need 72 hours to reach full bond strength?
Acrylic adhesive builds bond strength progressively as it flows into and keys with micro-surface irregularities under the sustained pressure of the foam core; this process continues over the first 72 hours after application. Initial handling strength is reached within an hour, but the maximum rated bond is only achieved at full cure.
Is 3M VHB tape suitable for outdoor and marine use?
Yes; the acrylic foam construction is UV-stable and resists humidity, temperature variation and moisture ingress; the bond also provides a continuous watertight seal along the tape line.
