Ultra-thin bonding, invisible results – precision adhesive performance you can trust

3M 924 adhesive transfer tape is an acrylic transfer film for bonding, mounting and assembly work where a thin, invisible adhesive layer is needed and no carrier film should remain between the two bonded surfaces. The acrylic adhesive is coated onto a polyester liner; when applied with a 700ATG dispenser the adhesive transfers cleanly from the liner to the substrate, leaving a precise, solvent-free bond line with good UV and chemical resistance. Rated to 80°C maximum, UV-stable, available in 12mm and 19mm widths on 55m rolls on a 25mm core. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture.

Sold in packs of 12 rolls, priced per roll.

Where does 3M 924 adhesive transfer tape work best?

It suits precision bonding applications where leaving a carrier film between two surfaces would compromise the result, and where a clean, even adhesive line matters more than the quick grab of a foam or double-sided tape.

  • Graphic arts and print finishing: mounting photographs, prints and artwork flush to boards or frames with no visible carrier layer between substrate and backing.
  • Point-of-sale and signage assembly: bonding lightweight display panels, labels and decorative elements to plastic, glass, metal and board where a thin bond line is required.
  • Small-component assembly: attaching nameplates, badges, gaskets and trim pieces where the applied area is small, accuracy matters, and the bond must resist UV and solvent exposure.
  • Operations already using the 700ATG dispenser that need a general-purpose multipurpose grade alongside the higher-tack 969 option.

Not suitable for

  • Temperatures above 80°C: applications in high-heat environments above this threshold require a specialist high-temperature adhesive.
  • Carton sealing and parcel tape applications: adhesive transfer tape is a precision bonding product, not a box-sealing tape; for carton sealing use polypropylene packaging tape.
  • Heavy structural bonding: for load-bearing or structural applications use 3M VHB double-sided foam tape, which is designed for high-load bonding and vibration absorption.

How to use

Adhesive transfer tape applies the adhesive to the substrate and leaves the liner behind; the 700ATG dispenser controls this process and determines application accuracy. Attempting to apply this tape by hand without the dispenser will produce uneven adhesive coverage and waste.

  • Load the 700ATG dispenser: fit the 25mm core roll into the 3M Scotch 700ATG dispenser. The 25mm core is specific to the ATG system; this tape isn’t compatible with standard 76mm pistol grip dispensers.
  • Prepare the surfaces: both surfaces to be bonded must be clean, dry and free from dust, grease and any release agent. Acrylic adhesive bonds permanently on most surfaces; contamination prevents the bond forming correctly and cannot be corrected after application.
  • Apply the adhesive to the first surface: run the dispenser along the surface to deposit the adhesive layer. The liner feeds back through the dispenser as the adhesive transfers; check that the liner is winding correctly and not bunching during application.
  • Bond the two surfaces: place the second surface onto the adhesive and press firmly and evenly across the full bonded area; acrylic adhesive builds full bond strength over the first 24 to 72 hours, so avoid stressing the joint immediately after application where possible.
  • Store correctly: store at 15–25°C, maximum 65% relative humidity, out of direct sunlight. Shelf life is 24 months from manufacture.

Choose the right tape

  • Choose this 3M 924 adhesive transfer tape for general-purpose bonding, mounting and assembly using the ATG dispenser system where good UV and solvent resistance is required.
  • Choose 3M Scotch ATG high-tack adhesive transfer tape 969 when higher tack is needed for textured, flexible or difficult surfaces, or for POS displays and signage assembly.
  • Choose 3M Scotch ATG adhesive transfer tape 904 for photo mounting, picture framing and graphic arts applications using the same ATG dispenser system.

Product FAQs

What is adhesive transfer tape and how is it different from double-sided tape?

Double-sided tape has a carrier film coated on both sides; after bonding, the carrier remains between the two surfaces. Adhesive transfer tape has no carrier: the acrylic adhesive is coated onto a liner which is peeled away during application, leaving only a thin adhesive layer between the two bonded surfaces with no visible film in the joint.

Why does this 3M 924 ATG tape require the 700ATG dispenser?

The 25mm core is specific to the 3M ATG dispenser system and won’t fit a standard 76mm pistol grip dispenser. The 700ATG applies the adhesive at a consistent rate while the liner winds back through the dispenser; applying the tape without the dispenser results in uneven coverage and makes it difficult to control where the adhesive is deposited.

What does the 50 micron thickness refer to on a transfer tape?

On a conventional tape, total thickness includes the film backing and adhesive coat. On a transfer tape the liner is removed during application, so 50 micron here represents the combined thickness of the adhesive layer and the polyester liner as supplied; the adhesive layer left on the substrate after bonding is thinner than 50 micron.

What is the difference between the 3M 924 and the 3M 969 tape?

Both use acrylic adhesive and the same ATG dispenser system. The 924 is the multipurpose general-purpose grade with standard tack; the 969 carries a higher-tack adhesive formulation suited to more demanding surfaces including flexible materials, textured substrates and applications requiring greater peel strength.
