Give cartons a strong ecological seal

Self-adhesive paper tape 80gsm is a hot melt brown paper tape used for sealing cartons and parcels up to 20kg at high-throughput hand-packing stations in e-commerce, retail despatch, and fulfilment environments. Synthetic rubber hot melt adhesive achieves faster initial tack on first contact than natural rubber alternatives, reducing dwell time per seal on busy packing benches. It tears by hand and recycles with the box.

80gsm brown paper tape with synthetic hot melt adhesive. Faster initial grab than natural rubber tape on the same board surface. Seals cartons up to 20kg, tears by hand. 75mm width on 50m rolls.

Best for

  • High-throughput hand-packing stations sealing cartons up to 20kg where speed of initial adhesive grab matters. Hot melt adhesive bonds on first contact without the pressure dwell period that natural rubber requires, reducing the time each seal needs before the carton can move on.
  • E-commerce and fulfilment operations running consistent carton sizes where a single 75mm width covers the seam in one pass, removing width selection decisions mid-shift.
  • Retail and customer-facing despatch where a clean brown paper finish is required and polypropylene tape is not appropriate for brand or recyclability reasons.
  • Businesses with a single-stream recycling policy. Brown paper tape and hot melt adhesive recycle with the box in standard UK cardboard recycling streams — no separation needed at disposal.
  • Ambient temperature warehouses operating consistently between 15°C and 40°C, where the narrower application temperature range of hot melt adhesive is not a constraint.

Not for

  • Cartons over 20kg. Weight rating is under 20kg — the same as the 57gsm natural rubber tape. The advantage of this product is speed of bond, not increased load capacity. Use reinforced paper tape for cartons above 30kg.
  • Cold environments below 15°C. The minimum application temperature for hot melt adhesive is 15°C — 5°C higher than the natural rubber tapes in this range. Unheated loading bays and overnight cold warehouses regularly fall below this in UK winters.
  • Warm storage or vehicles above 40°C. Hot melt adhesive softens at lower temperatures than natural rubber. This tape should not be stored or used in sun-exposed areas, vehicles, or any environment that regularly exceeds 40°C.
  • Stations needing multiple width options. This product is available in 75mm only. For 25mm or 48mm widths, the 57gsm or 70gsm natural rubber tapes cover those formats.
  • Humid environments above 65% RH. The paper backing absorbs moisture causing edge curl and reduced bond strength on the carton surface.

Key features

  • Synthetic rubber hot melt adhesive for faster initial tack. Hot melt adhesive is applied at high temperature during manufacture and sets into a pressure-sensitive layer with higher immediate grab than cold-applied natural rubber. On first contact with corrugated board, it keys into the surface faster, reducing the time each seal needs to be held before the carton moves on. On a high-volume bench processing hundreds of cartons per shift, that reduction in dwell time per seal adds up across the day.
  • 80gsm paper backing for consistent hand-tear across a full shift. At 80gsm, the paper backing is the densest in the self-adhesive paper tape range. The heavier backing resists longitudinal splitting under application tension, producing a cleaner, straighter tear line than lighter tapes at the same pulling angle. It tears by hand without a blade across the grain — no cutter required.
  • 75mm width for full carton seam coverage in one pass. At 75mm, one pass covers a standard double-flap carton seam completely, including the flap overlap zone where narrower tapes can leave an exposed gap. On a consistent carton format, this removes the decision on whether one or two passes is needed per seal.
  • Recyclable with the box — no separation at disposal. Brown paper tape and synthetic hot melt adhesive are accepted in standard UK cardboard recycling streams. RAJA holds ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification and a Gold rating from EcoVadis, placing it in the top 5% of companies globally for sustainability. Tape and box go into the same collection without manual separation.
  • 76mm core for standard desktop dispenser compatibility. Fits all standard 76mm desktop tape dispensers without adapters. If your team runs other paper tapes from the RAJA range on 76mm dispensers, this tape uses the same equipment with no changeover cost.

How to get the best result

  1. Confirm the application temperature range suits your environment

Hot melt adhesive has a narrower application temperature window than natural rubber: 15°C minimum, 40°C maximum. Before switching to this tape, check your packing area temperature across the full working day — including early morning when loading bay doors are open. A packing area that reads 17°C at 9am can drop below 15°C at 6am in winter. Seals applied below 15°C will look bonded but the hot melt layer will not have fully set on the board surface and will peel under load.

  2. Check carton weight — this tape is rated to the same 20kg limit as the 57gsm

The advantage of 80gsm hot melt tape over lighter natural rubber tapes is speed of initial bond, not increased load capacity. Weight limit is under 20kg. For cartons regularly reaching 20-30kg, the 70gsm strong paper tape is the correct specification. Using this tape above its weight limit produces seals that hold on the bench but fail at the first handling or palletisation stage.

  3. Apply at consistent tension across the full 75mm width

Hot melt adhesive achieves faster initial tack than natural rubber, but consistent tension during application still governs final bond quality. Tape applied at uneven tension across a 75mm width produces a seal where the centre is under-bonded relative to the edges. On a busy bench this is the most common cause of seal failure on mid-carton seams. A desktop dispenser controls tension more reliably than hand-pulling across a long shift and is the recommended setup for high-volume stations.

  4. Tear across the grain at a clean right angle

80gsm paper tears cleanly when pulled sharply perpendicular to the roll direction. At 80gsm, this is the densest backing in the self-adhesive paper tape range — the pulling angle matters more than on the 57gsm or 70gsm tapes. A clean right-angle pull downward produces a straight edge. Pulling back along the tape length produces a ragged split that leaves a frayed edge on the carton seam and wastes tape.

  5. Store rolls horizontally in original packaging at 15-25°C, below 65% RH

Hot melt adhesive is more temperature-sensitive in storage than natural rubber. The optimal storage range is 15-25°C — tighter than the 14-28°C range for natural rubber tapes. Rolls stored above 25°C can experience adhesive softening that reduces tack consistency across the roll. Store away from radiators, south-facing windows, and loading bay doors. Shelf life under correct conditions is 9 months.

Choosing the right tape for your operation

This tape's advantage is speed of initial bond. If that's not the constraint, one of the natural rubber tapes in the range may be a better fit for your environment.

  • Self-adhesive paper tape 80gsm (this product): Cartons up to 20kg, high-throughput hand-packing, ambient temperature 15-40°C, 75mm width suits your carton seam, recyclability required.
  • Self-adhesive paper tape 57gsm: Cartons up to 20kg where throughput is lower and multiple width options (25mm, 48mm, 75mm) are needed across different carton sizes. Natural rubber adhesive performs down to 10°C — better for cold environments.
  • Self-adhesive paper tape 70gsm: Cartons between 20kg and 30kg where hand-tear and recyclability are required but the 57gsm is at its weight limit. Natural rubber adhesive, rated to 10°C.
  • Reinforced 125gsm paper tape: Cartons above 30kg or subject to rough transit handling where unreinforced paper tape of any weight will not hold under seam stress.
  • Polypropylene tape: Where maximum throughput speed is needed on a machine dispenser, recyclability is not required, or temperatures regularly fall below 15°C.

Frequently asked questions

What is hot melt paper tape?

Hot melt paper tape is a self-adhesive brown paper tape with a synthetic rubber hot melt adhesive that bonds on contact without water or heat activation at the point of use. The adhesive is applied during manufacture at high temperature and sets into a pressure-sensitive layer with faster initial tack than natural rubber alternatives. It is used for sealing cartons up to 20kg at high-throughput hand-packing stations where speed of bond per seal matters.

What is the difference between hot melt and natural rubber paper tape?

The difference is in adhesive formulation and initial tack speed. Hot melt synthetic rubber adhesive achieves a faster grab on corrugated board at first contact — reducing the dwell time needed per seal before the carton moves on. Natural rubber adhesive bonds reliably but requires brief held pressure to fully wet-out into the board surface. Hot melt paper tape also has a narrower temperature range (15-40°C versus 10-60°C for natural rubber), making natural rubber the better choice for cold or warm storage environments.

Is self-adhesive hot melt paper tape recyclable?

Yes. Brown paper tape with synthetic hot melt adhesive is accepted in standard UK cardboard recycling streams. The tape does not need to be removed from the box before recycling. RAJA holds a Gold rating from EcoVadis and ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification. If you use a specialist contracted waste service, confirm with your contractor that synthetic hot melt adhesive residue is accepted in their stream.

Why is my paper tape not sticking in cold conditions?

Hot melt adhesive has a minimum application temperature of 15°C. Below this, the adhesive does not fully key into the corrugated board surface and seals will peel under load — even if they appear bonded on the bench. This is 5°C higher than the natural rubber tapes in this range, which perform down to 10°C. If your packing area drops below 15°C at any point in the working day, switch to a natural rubber paper tape or bring cartons to the correct temperature before sealing.

What weight of carton can 80gsm paper tape seal?

Self-adhesive paper tape 80gsm is rated for cartons up to 20kg — the same weight limit as the 57gsm natural rubber tape. The 80gsm's advantage over the 57gsm is faster initial bond speed, not increased load capacity. For cartons between 20kg and 30kg, use the 70gsm strong paper tape. For cartons above 30kg, reinforced paper tape is the correct specification.

Can I use a tape dispenser with 80gsm paper tape?

Yes. This tape runs on any standard desktop tape dispenser with a 76mm core. A dispenser is particularly useful at high-volume stations — it maintains consistent tension across the full 75mm width more reliably than hand-pulling across a long shift, and reduces the uneven bonding at the seam centre that causes the most common seal failures at this tape's 20kg weight limit.

How should I store 80gsm hot melt paper tape?

Store rolls horizontally in original packaging at 15-25°C with relative humidity below 65%. The optimal temperature range for hot melt adhesive in storage is tighter than for natural rubber tapes. Rolls stored above 25°C can experience adhesive softening that reduces tack consistency. Keep away from radiators, south-facing windows, and loading bay doors. Shelf life under correct conditions is 9 months.

You might also need

  • Desktop tape dispensers with 76mm core compatibility. At high-throughput stations where this tape's speed advantage is most valuable, a dispenser maintains consistent tension across the 75mm width and removes hand fatigue as a variable in seal quality across a full shift.
  • Cardboard boxes and cartons sized to your product range. At 20kg, this tape is working at the top of its weight rating — pairing it with correctly specified single or double-wall corrugated board means the carton and the seal are both rated for the load.
  • Void fill to maintain internal load distribution. Under-filled cartons shift contents in transit and concentrate impact stress at the sealed seam — at 20kg that internal movement creates forces that correctly applied tape cannot absorb if the carton is not adequately filled.
