The right silica gel packet is the one sized to the sealed air volume you’re protecting, in the grade your workflow needs. When specifying desiccant packs, consider:

• Sealed air volume – the standard rule of thumb is 5g of silica gel per cubic foot of sealed air space.
• Carton seal and transit length – dose at the higher end for unsealed cartons, longer transits and humid destinations.
• Freight level – a silica gel packet protects the carton it sits in, not a 40ft container. Sea freight needs calcium chloride.
• Plastic reduction targets – Clay alternatives to standard silica gel desiccants do the same operational job as a silica gel pack without the plastic film.

Silica gel sachets control humidity. It doesn’t stop impact damage or seal a carton, so pair packets with:

• Packaging tape – a properly sealed carton maintains the dry environment the desiccant creates
• Void fill – stops goods moving and shifting in the carton

For temperature-sensitive shipments, silica gel works alongside chilled packaging and cooling gel packs rather than replacing them. They’re different products doing different jobs.

How long do silica gel packets last?

Silica gel saturates, rather than expires. Unopened packets stored in sealed packaging keep indefinitely, and a correctly dosed packet inside a well-sealed carton lasts the length of the transit. Packets left in open air can reach capacity within days, so store spares airtight.

Are desiccant packs reusable?

Yes, desiccant packs are reusable. Silica gel sachets can be reactivated by oven drying, which drives off the absorbed moisture and returns the beads to working capacity. Drying out desiccant packs is cost-effective for in-house packing and reusable warehouse equipment, but rarely worth the overhead for one-shot transit packets.
