Silent dispensing
Low noise packing tape is a 28 micron polypropylene film tape with an acrylic adhesive that unwinds quietly from the dispenser. The RAJA low noise polypropylene packaging tape seals corrugated cartons up to 20kg and is designed for open-plan offices, customer-facing packing areas and confined despatch environments where the noise of standard polypropylene tape is disruptive. UV resistant once applied. Available in brown and clear, 48mm wide, in 66m and 100m roll lengths on a 76mm core.
A 28 micron polypropylene packing tape with acrylic adhesive for quiet application. UV resistant once applied, rated for cartons up to 20kg. Available in brown and clear, one width, two roll lengths.
Best for
- Open-plan offices and customer-facing despatch areas where tape noise is disruptive. The acrylic adhesive on the low noise grade releases from the backing film gradually and quietly, without the loud ripping sound produced by hot melt adhesive tapes. Packing staff in shared or public-facing spaces can seal cartons throughout the working day without creating noise disturbance.
- Retail packing counters and in-store despatch where customer experience matters. Sealing parcels audibly with standard polypropylene tape in a shop environment is disruptive to customers and staff. The low noise grade removes this entirely without requiring a change in tape dispenser or application technique.
- High-volume e-commerce packing lines in confined or acoustic-sensitive warehouses. Where multiple packing stations operate in close proximity, the cumulative noise of standard hot melt tape across several dispensers can be significant. Switching all stations to low noise tape reduces overall ambient noise without affecting throughput or seal quality.
- Operations already using 28 micron polypropylene tape that need a quieter alternative. The low noise grade uses the same 28 micron film, the same 76mm core, and is rated for the same 20kg weight capacity as the standard grade. The switch requires no dispenser change and no retraining.
- The 100m roll length for high-volume lines where roll changes slow throughput. The 100m roll contains 52% more tape than the standard 66m roll, reducing the frequency of roll changes on busy packing lines. Both lengths use the same 76mm core and fit the same dispensers.
Not for
- Cartons over 20kg. The 28 micron film and acrylic adhesive are not rated for load stress above 20kg. Use RAJA heavy duty low noise tape (PDT01547) for heavier cartons where quiet application is still needed.
- Applications requiring the fastest possible initial bond. Acrylic adhesive takes 15 to 30 seconds to develop full peel strength. If cartons must be moved immediately after sealing, the standard 28 micron hot melt grade (PDT01423) bonds faster on contact.
- Operations where kerbside recyclability is a requirement. Polypropylene film cannot be recycled in paper or corrugated streams. Use self-adhesive paper tape where cartons must be recyclable without tape removal.
- Hand-tear applications where no dispenser is available. The tape is not hand-tearable in most SKUs. A 76mm-core tape dispenser is required for clean cutting.
Key features
Acrylic adhesive — quiet unwinding without compromising seal strength
The low noise characteristic comes directly from the acrylic adhesive. Standard polypropylene tape uses a hot melt adhesive that is bonded tightly to the backing film; as it unwinds under tension, it stretches and releases abruptly, producing a loud snapping sound. Acrylic adhesive has a lower bond to the film backing and releases gradually as the roll unwinds, producing a consistent, quiet peel. The adhesive chemistry is the only difference between this grade and the standard 28 micron tape; film thickness, weight capacity and core size are the same. Acrylic adhesive is also UV resistant once applied, maintaining seal integrity in brightly lit storage and outdoor holding environments.
28 micron polypropylene film — same gauge as the standard grade
The 28 micron film provides the same tensile strength as the standard 28 micron hot melt grade. At 46 microns total thickness, the tape lays flat across corrugated seams without bridging at the flute peaks. The identical film specification means the low noise grade is a direct substitute for the standard grade on any line rated for cartons up to 20kg, with no change to carton handling or seal inspection procedures.
UV resistant once applied — stable seal in lit and outdoor environments
The acrylic adhesive provides UV resistance once the tape is applied and bonded to the board surface. Seals remain intact in brightly lit warehouses, outdoor transit environments and UV-exposed storage areas. As with all polypropylene tape in the range, UV resistance applies after application; store rolls in sealed original packaging away from direct sunlight before use.
66m and 100m roll lengths — flexibility for low and high volume lines
The 66m roll suits lower-volume operations and post rooms where storage space is limited and rolls are changed infrequently. The 100m roll suits high-volume packing lines where frequent roll changes reduce throughput. Both lengths are wound on a 76mm core and fit all standard dispensers including the RAJA low noise tape dispenser (PDT02202).
76mm core — no equipment change from standard polypropylene tape
All rolls are wound on a 76mm core, the standard diameter across the RAJA polypropylene tape range. Switching from the standard hot melt grade to the low noise grade requires no new dispensers, no new tooling and no adjustment to the packing process. The only operational difference is the reduction in application noise.
How to get the best result
Acrylic adhesive requires a clean surface and time to develop its bond; moving cartons before the adhesive has set is the most common cause of seal failure with low noise tape.
-
Check carton surface temperature and cleanliness before applying
Inspect the seam area for dust, moisture and contamination before taping. Acrylic adhesive is less forgiving of surface imperfections than hot melt; dust and moisture reduce contact area and prevent full bond development. If cartons have been stored in a cold area, allow them to reach ambient temperature before sealing. Applying below 0°C will produce a seal that appears intact but has not bonded. Wipe the seam with a dry cloth if any moisture or debris is present.
-
Load the roll onto a 76mm-core tape dispenser before starting your shift
Seat the roll on the dispenser spindle with the adhesive side facing the blade. Pull approximately 10cm of tape over the blade and confirm it seats flat without bunching. For the quietest possible application, use the RAJA low noise tape dispenser (PDT02202), which is designed to minimise noise at both the unwinding and cutting stages. Confirm the blade is sharp before starting; a blunt blade leaves frayed tape edges that lift from the carton.
-
Apply in a single continuous pass from the centre seam outward
Start at the centre of the top or bottom seam and draw the dispenser in one continuous pass toward the carton edge, then back to centre and out toward the opposite edge. This H-seal pattern distributes tape evenly across the seam without tension building at the centre. For cartons over 15kg, run an additional strip across each end panel to close the H-seal fully.
-
Apply firm pressure along the full seal and allow 30 seconds for the bond to develop
Run the heel of your hand or the back of the dispenser blade along the full length of the tape immediately after laying. Acrylic adhesive develops peel strength through sustained contact pressure and takes 15 to 30 seconds to reach full bond strength. Do not stack or move the carton during this window. On textured or high-recycled-content board, where the surface is more irregular, pressing the tape down fully is particularly important as the adhesive has less uniform contact area to work with.
-
Store unused rolls correctly and rotate stock to maintain shelf life
Store rolls horizontally in original sealed packaging at 15°C to 25°C with humidity below 50%. Do not store in loading bays, near external doors or in unheated areas. Shelf life is 12 months from manufacture. Write the delivery date on each case on arrival and rotate stock using a first-in, first-out system. Beyond 12 months, acrylic adhesive degrades and will not develop full bond strength even under correct application conditions.

Choosing the right polypropylene tape for your operation
The low noise grade shares the same film specification as the standard 28 micron tape and is a direct substitute where quiet application is needed. Step up for heavier cartons or faster bonding requirements.
Noise is not a concern and the fastest possible initial bond is needed. The hot melt adhesive bonds on contact without a dwell period, making it the better choice for high-speed lines where cartons are moved immediately after sealing. Also available in 25mm and 75mm widths and 132m roll lengths.
Choose this tape (low noise 28 micron, PDT01868) when:
Cartons are up to 20kg and the operation runs in a noise-sensitive environment: open-plan offices, customer-facing retail, confined packing areas or multi-station warehouses where cumulative tape noise is a workplace concern. The acrylic adhesive provides UV resistance once applied and the same film strength as the standard grade. Available in 66m and 100m roll lengths.
Cartons are above 20kg and quiet application is still required. The heavy duty low noise grade uses an acrylic adhesive for silent unwinding and is rated for heavier cartons, making it the natural step up from this tape for operations that need both noise reduction and greater load capacity.
Cartons are between 20kg and 30kg and noise is not a concern. The natural rubber adhesive on the 32 micron grade provides faster initial grab and higher peel strength but is louder on application than either low noise grade.
The operation requires kerbside recyclable packaging. Paper tape is hand-tearable, inherently quieter than polypropylene tape on application, and recyclable with the box.
Frequently asked questions
What is low noise packing tape?
Low noise packing tape (PDT01868) is a 28 micron polypropylene film tape with an acrylic adhesive that unwinds quietly from the dispenser. At 46 microns total thickness, it seals corrugated cartons up to 20kg and is designed for open-plan offices, customer-facing environments and confined packing areas where standard polypropylene tape noise is disruptive. Available in brown and clear, 48mm wide, in 66m and 100m roll lengths on a 76mm core.
What makes this packaging tape low noise?
The low noise characteristic comes from the acrylic adhesive. Standard polypropylene tape uses a hot melt adhesive that stretches and snaps back against the film as it unwinds, creating a loud ripping sound. Acrylic adhesive releases from the backing film more gradually and quietly. The noise reduction is consistent whether the tape is used with a dispenser or applied by hand.
What is the difference between low noise packing tape and standard 28 micron polypropylene tape?
Both are 28 micron polypropylene film tapes rated for cartons up to 20kg. The low noise grade (PDT01868) uses an acrylic adhesive that unwinds quietly and is UV resistant. The standard grade (PDT01423) uses a synthetic hot melt adhesive that is louder on application but bonds faster on contact. The low noise grade is available in one width (48mm) in 66m and 100m rolls; the standard grade is available in three widths including 25mm and 75mm.
Can low noise polypropylene tape be recycled?
Polypropylene tape cannot be recycled in paper or cardboard streams. The polypropylene film must be removed from corrugated board before the board is recycled. Polypropylene tape requires specialist plastic film collection; it cannot go in household kerbside recycling. For operations where kerbside recyclability is required, use self-adhesive paper tape, which is recyclable with the box.
Does low noise packing tape work with a standard tape gun?
Yes. All rolls are wound on a 76mm core, which fits all standard pistol-grip and bench-mounted tape dispensers. The tape unwinds quietly from both pistol-grip and bench dispensers. Use the RAJA low noise tape dispenser (PDT02202) for the quietest possible application.
What weight of carton can low noise packing tape seal?
Low noise packing tape is rated for cartons up to 20kg. For cartons above 20kg where quiet application is still needed, use RAJA heavy duty low noise tape (PDT01547). For cartons over 30kg, use self-adhesive reinforced paper tape (PDT523581).
Why is my low noise tape lifting or not bonding?
Acrylic adhesive requires a clean, dry surface and firm pressure along the full seal length to develop its bond. Unlike hot melt, acrylic takes 15 to 30 seconds to reach full peel strength after application. Applying to dusty, damp or cold board, or failing to press the tape down after laying, are the most common causes of failure. Do not move sealed cartons immediately; allow the bond to develop before stacking.
How should I store low noise packing tape rolls?
Store rolls horizontally in original sealed packaging at 15°C to 25°C with humidity below 50%. Shelf life is 12 months from manufacture. Do not store in unheated areas or near external doors. Rotate stock using a first-in, first-out system and do not use rolls beyond the shelf life date.
